Alcorn State is getting busy within the region.

The Braves program extended a college football opportunity to Henderson's Matthew Childers on Wednesday afternoon. It's Childers' first offer from a Division I program and second opportunity at the collegiate level, following a Division II invitation from Northeastern State in Oklahoma.

Childers (6-5, 185), a junior quarterback, receiver and free safety at Henderson, first announced the news through his personal Twitter account.

Alcorn State, located in Lorman, Miss., offered Liberty-Eylau offensive lineman Franklin Smith II on Monday.

The Braves compete at the FCS level in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and will be led by first-year coach Fred McNair this season. McNair is the brother of the late Alcorn State and NFL quarterback Steve McNair.

Alcorn State won the Black College National Championship in 2014 and finished last season with a 9-4 record. The Braves ended the 2015 campaign with a 41-34 loss to North Carolina A&T in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl.

Childers is the third current Henderson player to hold a Division I offer.

Henderson receiver Trestan Ebner is the second-most recruited junior from the area and Henderson running back La'Kendrick Van Zandt has one Division I offer from Incarnate Word.

Childers, like Ebner and Van Zandt, helped Henderson to a 7-3 finish in 2015. Unfortunately, the squad missed the playoffs due to the combination of games it lost within District 9-4A Division I.

Henderson closed the year with a bang by defeating a Kilgore team that had already clinched the league championship.

Childers, as well as all other high school football prospects currently in their junior year across the nation, will become eligible to sign with any program that offers him in February.
