Pine Tree head coach and athletic director Derek Fitzhenry confirmed with ETSN.fm on Monday afternoon that veteran coach Barry Bowman will be PT's next defensive coordinator, pending school board approval.

Bowman, a Spring Hill graduate, has previous assistant coaching experience at Pine Tree. He has been the head coach and AD at Paris for the past two years after leading Daingerfield to three consecutive Class 2A state championships from 2008-10.

Fitzhenry said Bowman is making the move for family reasons and to be closer to home. Fitzhenry and Bowman are both proponents of the 3-3 stack defense, which Bowman installed at Daingerfield after talking with Fitzhenry when Fitzhenry was head coach at Giddings. Fitzhenry said Bowman will bring his knowledge of the scheme to Pine Tree.

Bowman and Fitzhenry also spent two years as college teammates at Louisiana Tech. (Kilgore head coach/AD Mike Wood also played for Louisiana Tech at the time.)

Bowman led Paris to a 17-6 record in his two seasons, reaching the Class 3A Division I Region II semifinals in 2012 with an 8-4 record.

Bowman's Daingerfield teams went a combined 44-3 in a three-year span. The Tigers had identical 15-1 seasons in 2008 and 2009 en route to 2A Division II state crowns. They followed that season with a 14-1 campaign that ended in the 2A Division I state championship.
