Damion Miller is a Texas commitment, but the Longhorns still have some work to do through the next few months to ensure the junior John Tyler receiver signs on the dotted line.

Rival teams have not stopped testing the waters.

Baylor passed through John Tyler on Tuesday and extended Miller (6-1, 189) a college football scholarship opportunity later in the day. John Tyler's football Twitter account, overseen by head coach Ricklan Holmes, first reported the news.

Miller is one of three players at John Tyler currently being recruited. Quarterback Bryson Smith and defensive back Javontavius Mosley have at least eight offers apiece.

For Miller, the Bears' opportunity marked his 10th invitation to join a college football team after graduation next year. Houston, Kansas, Mississippi, North Texas, Oklahoma State, SMU and Texas Tech are the other teams in the chase aside from Texas and Baylor.

Miller most recently caught 41 passes for 912 yards and nine touchdowns in a 12-game season. John Tyler reached the Class 5A Division I area round before falling to Mansfield Lake Ridge.

Lake Ridge advanced to the state championship game.

As a sophomore, Miller helped guide John Tyler to a Class 5A Division I state semifinals appearance. He pulled down eight touchdowns and averaged about 23 yards per reception in 15 games.

John Tyler will participate in Class 6A for Miller's senior year due to an increasing student enrollment.

Miller is expected to participate in the ETSN.fm + APEC Football Recruiting Combine on May 22. He attended the event ahead of his junior season and exited with top 10 finishes in the 40-yard dash, broad jump and vertical jump events among the 113 invite-only athletes.

Baylor, meanwhile, threatened to win a third straight Big 12 title through the first week of November and climbed as high as No. 2 in the AP poll before dropping three of its final four regular season games last year. It ultimately finished fourth in the league and subsequently defeated North Carolina in the Citrus Bowl.

The Bears' decline began only after starting quarterback Seth Russell was lost for the season with a neck injury in a win against Iowa State. Backup and true freshman quarterback Jarrett Stidham kept the winning streak going for another week at Kansas State, but the squad was handed its first loss against ultimate league champion Oklahoma on Nov. 14.

Stidham was lost for the season with a broken ankle in the following game — a win at Oklahoma State.

Both signal callers should be available once again this season.

Head coach Art Briles, a former Texas high school coach, is preparing for his eighth season in Waco and inherited a program slightly below .500 through its first 109 years of existence. He has a 99-65 overall record despite the fact his first two Baylor teams went 4-8.

Baylor has not missed a bowl game since 2009 and has posted four 10-win seasons in the span, including three straight with a conference championship win in 2013 and a shared conference title with TCU in 2014.

The 2016 Bears football team will feature seven East Texas players.

Miller, like all high school football players currently in their junior year, will become eligible to sign with any program that offers him in February. He is free to change his verbal commitment status at any time.
