It took a while, but Marshall 2018 ATH Marje Smith is now officially a Division I recruit.

Smith reported via Twitter on Friday and Saturday that both Baylor and SFA have given him his first D-I scholarship offers.

SFA was the first to offer Friday night, and Baylor followed Saturday afternoon.

Smith (6-6, 201) can be used in wide variety of roles at the next level, but most see his future as an edge rusher at defensive end.

Last season, he played on both sides of the ball for Marshall. As a receiver, Smith had six catches for 185 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, he made 23 tackles and recorded a sack.

Expectations for Marshall have jumped a bit since the end of 2016. Former SMU running backs coach Claude Mathis left his collegiate job for the head coach position in deep East Texas.

In addition to Smith, the Mavs have three other players with Division I offers -- all offensive linemen, Chasen Hines (LSU commit), Kameron King, and Christian Hood.

Baylor is transitioning to new head coach Matt Rhule off an interim season under Jim Grobe. Last season’s team closed the campaign with a win in the Cactus Bowl for a final record of 7-6 final.

Rhule, meanwhile, led his former Temple program to an American Athletic Conference championship game win after a 9-3 regular season. Temple went on to fall to Wake Forest in the Military Bowl several days after Rhule signed on with the Bears program.

The Bears have a total of four offers out to East Texans in the 2018 class. In addition to Smith, Baylor has targeted Hines, and Carthage running back Keaontay Ingram and Arp safety DeMarvion Overshown -- both Texas commits.

SFA in an FCS school and member of the Southland Conference. The Lumberjacks are coached by Clint Conque, and finished last season with an overall record of 5-6.

Smith will first become eligible to sign with any program that offers him in December.
