Boys Basketball Roundup: San Augustine + Douglass Clinch Regional Tournament Berths

NACOGDOCHES — A huge fourth quarter powered No. 8 San Augustine to a 69-57 victory over New Summerfield in Tuesday’s Class A Division I Region III quarterfinal at Central Heights High School.

San Augustine (21-6) plays No. 9 Kerens, which beat No. 11 LaPoynor 59-57 on Tuesday in Nacogdoches, in a noon Friday Class A D-I Region III semifinal at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium.

San Augustine outscored New Summerfield 27-10 in the fourth quarter to storm back for the victory. The Wolves, who were led by Jarvis Smith’s 13 points and 20 rebounds, held New Summerfield to 19 second-half points.

San Augustine’s Dezmond Randle scored a team-high 18 points, while Bobby Tanner added 16 points.

The winner of Friday’s San Augustine vs. Kerens game plays No. 6 Dallardsville Big Sandy or No. 3 Grapeland, which play at 10 a.m. Friday at TJC. The regional championship game is noon Saturday at TJC.

No. 9 Douglass Pulls Away from No. 5 Calvert

FAIRFIELD — Ninth-ranked Douglass stifled No. 5 Calvert in the second of a 50-38 Class A Division II Region IV quarterfinal victory Tuesday at Fairfield High School.

Douglass plays No. 18 Menard, which beat Utopia 53-43 on Tuesday, in Friday’s 6 p.m. Class A D-II Region IV semifinal at Canyon High School in New Braunfels.

Douglass, which led 25-22 at halftime, held Calvert to 15 second-half points to pull away for the 12-point victory.

Reed Westbrook’s 19 points led Douglass, which got 12 points from Jake Raines and 10 points from Jason Hobson. Bryce Westbrook scored seven points. Cory Chopp’s 18 points led Calvert, followed by Taron Gipson (6), William Golden (6), and Tyrone Huffman (5).

The Douglass vs. Menard winner plays No. 10 Oakwood or D’Hanis in the regional championship. Oakwood plays D’Hanis at 4 p.m. Friday at New Braunfels’ Canyon High School. The Saturday championship is at 3:30 p.m.
