Carthage Class 3A’s New No. 1 in Weekly Associated Press Poll

The Carthage Bulldogs are Class 3A's new No. 1-ranked team in the latest Associated Press poll, which was released Monday.

Carthage (1-0) opened the season with a 42-28 win over Jacksonville last Friday. The Bulldogs replace Stephenville, which fell to No. 2, in the top spot after trailing Stephenville by just one point in the preseason poll.

There was no East Texas movement in the rest of the 3A poll as Gilmer (1-0) and Kilgore (1-0) are ranked No. 3 and No. 6, respectively. Gilmer began the year with an impressive 57-7 rout of Atlanta, while Kilgore blasted Marshall 42-7.

Jasper, Chapel Hill and Gladewater all received votes.

Lufkin (1-0), 52-28 winners over John Tyler, continued to receive votes in the 5A poll.

Whitehouse (1-0) moved up one spot to No. 5 in the 4A rankings after the Wildcats' 58-28 victory over Hallsville last week. John Tyler (0-1), which began the season No. 8, dropped out of the top 10 after its loss to Lufkin. The Lions are still receiving votes.

Newton (1-0) remained the No. 1-ranked team in 2A after the Eagles' 44-20 win over Bridge City. New Boston (1-0 still ranks No. 6 following its 48-6 defeat of DeKalb, while Tatum moved up one spot to No. 8 after a 21-6 win over Arp.

Daingerfield (0-1), a 16-14 loser to Gladewater, dropped out of the poll but is still receiving votes after ranking No. 7 in the preseason. White Oak, Hughes Springs and Corrigan-Camden also received votes.

In Class A, Tenaha held onto its No. 2 ranking after an impressive 47-6 season-opening rout of Joaquin. The Tigers are just five points behind No. 1 Mart. Alto (0-1), which lost to Elkhart, dropped from No. 3 to No. 8. West Sabine received votes.
