Lufkin Comes Back To Stun Rockwall-Heath In Game 1

Lufkin Clayton Gesford connects to deep left field.
Lufkin first baseman Clayton Gesford batted 3 for 4 and scored twice in the Panthers' 10-6 win Friday against Rockwall-Heath.

TYLER -- Lufkin doesn't have the record it did last season, but, in some ways, head coach John Cobb thinks his 2017 squad compares favorably to a team that got within one game of a state tournament berth last year.

Cobb's reasons were on display in Friday's 10-6 win against Rockwall-Heath at Tyler's Mike Carter Field. The Panthers outscored Heath 8-1 through the game's final two innings in a fairly major upset to start their Class 6A bi-district series.

Hallsville's Colton Oney crosses the plate on a seventh-inning Sulphur Springs error to tie the game, 2-2. The Bobcats won in extras.

HALLSVILLE -- The Bobcats spited two teams Friday in a 3-2 victory through eight innings.

There was their opponent, Sulphur Springs, but the Marshall baseball team also was in attendance after completing their regular season earlier in the week.

Sulphur Springs wanted to win an undisputed District 16-5A championship. Marshall also wanted Hallsville to lose so it would have the opportunity to play its way out of third place in the league standings.

Neither thing happened on the final night of the Texas high school regular season.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, center fielder Tye Smith snapped an 0 for 3 skid with a first-pitch ground ball through the left infield gap and plated Matt Wyman from third base for the biggest win of the season.

Lindale third baseman Jamey Richey gives the Eagles a 2-1 lead in the first inning with a slide under Whitehouse catcher Fiver Trimble's tag.

LINDALE -- Even the best teams face a moment during their run that makes them question if they have the right stuff.

Lindale's moment came Tuesday in its first game of a two-game series with Whitehouse that will determine whether District 17-5A has an outright champion or co-champions. It pulled ahead in the first inning and slumped in the middle frames, but it ultimately run-ruled the Wildcats by a score of 12-2 through six innings.
