SAN ANTONIO -- Woden learned Friday there's still a ways to go before it can claim its first girls basketball state championship. But it also got to see how much its first run past a regional tournament impacted the small community in Nacogdoches County as well as the alumni base that migrated elsewhere after graduation.

The Lady Eagles' tipped off in front of an Alamodome crowd of 4,187, about two-thirds of it supporting them, ahead of falling to Panhandle 62-37 in the Class 2A state semifinal round.

SAN ANTONIO -- Martin's Mill reversed what had been an awful second half from the floor in the final five minutes and stole a 58-50 win from defending Class 2A state champion Weimar in the state semifinal round Friday at the Alamodome.

Briley Moon connected on two 3-point shots within 18 seconds of each other to tie the game at the 1:49 mark of the fourth quarter, which snapped an initial 0-for-9 personal performance behind the line. The Lady Mustangs then scored eight unanswered points at the free throw line around a series of empty Weimar possessions to reach their second championship game in three seasons.

SAN ANTONIO -- It didn't matter that Mount Vernon had led by as many as 12 points. It didn't matter that Buffalo had only been up by one point leading up to crunch time in Thursday's Class 3A state semifinal game at the Alamodome.

What mattered was the contest was tied at the start of the fourth quarter. Buffalo capitalized for a 50-43 win and a berth into Saturday's 3A state championship game in San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO -- Slocum's season ended Thursday in the Class A state semifinals before 2,781 fans and a few pigeons that call the cavernous Alamodome home.

Its game against Nazareth wasn't close but for a few minutes, a 63-31 final score, and the Lady Mustangs had some time to digest the fact there would be no state championship game.

LONGVIEW -- Tuesday's highly anticipated showdown between Center and Pleasant Grove in the Class 4A regional quarterfinal round more than lived up to its billing.

The Roughriders endured nine first-half lead changes and held onto a one-possession advantage as late as the 4:15 mark of the fourth quarter en route to a 72-58 win at Spring Hill High School. They're back in the regional tournament setting for a second consecutive season.

LONGVIEW -- Mount Vernon may have robbed itself of an opportunity to visit San Antonio later this week by defeating Elysian Fields, 83-63, Tuesday in the regional quarterfinal round of the Class 3A state playoffs at Spring Hill High School.

Believe it or not, there was some disappointment on head coach Joe Thomas' end that he and his squad might not get to see the Lady Tigers play their 3A state semifinal game Thursday at the Alamodome.
