LONGVIEW -- No Caleb Chumley? Not a problem. This is where Dalvin Manns stepped in.

Pine Tree's backup quarterback filled the position quite nicely, throwing for 385 yards and five touchdowns -- four to Mason Hays -- to send the Pirates to a thrilling 42-38 win over Van in Friday night's season-opener.

Manns completed an incredible 16 of 19 passes in the win, which was Pine Tree's first game in the new Pirate Stadium. His 70-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Smith to open the second half was his only scoring throw not to go to Hays.

Hays caught six passes for 228 and four touchdowns, one of which was for 94 yards.

Van's Matt Savis rushed for 251 yards and four touchdowns on 42 carries, and also scored on a pass from Peter Maddox.

Savis scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to cut Pine Tree's lead to 42-38. Van got the ball back after a Pirates turnover with just over two minutes left. Maddox's pass with one second half went out of the end zone and Pine Tree escaped with the win.
