Damien Haskins Goes For Four TDs In New Boston’s 40-7 Win Over Commerce

{Johnny Green, Special to ETSN.fm}

MOUNT PLEASANT — Commerce proved that Damien Haskins is indeed human Friday at Sam Parker Field, but it made little difference in its Class 2A Division I Region II area playoff with New Boston.

Haskins was held to a season-low 133 yards on 19 carries, but still scored four touchdowns, moving his 2012 total to 50 as the unbeaten Lions (11-0) defeated Commerce, 40-7.

New Boston advanced to play another unbeaten team, Pottsboro, in next week’s regional semifinal. That game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Wildcat Stadium in Paris.

With Haskins bottled up in the first half, the Lions still bolted to a 26-0 lead on the passing of Aaron Conkleton to Tyjae Clark. The combo was good for 94 yards on three passes, one setting up the first of two Haskins 4-yard touchdown runs, the other resulting in a 65-yard touchdown.

Haskins also scored on a 36-yard run in the first half, then bolted 50 yards for another in the third quarter before Conkleton shook loose on a keeper for a 63-yard score.

Meanwhile, the Lions defense shut down Commerce’s offense, holding quarterback Scott Wells to 152 yards passing while getting interceptions from Dylan Martin, Jawuan Johnson and Dedric Draggoo. Commerce netted only 52 yards rushing on 31 attempts.

The Tigers finished 7-5 on the season, one of those losses to Pottsboro, 21-18.

The lone Commerce touchdown came on a Wells 31-yard pass to D’Lance Sharp against New Boston reserves with 6:25 left in the game.

Haskins now has 2,833 yards on the season and is 17 yards shy of the single-season school record set last year by Shakeem Jefferson. The Lions’ 11-game winning streak also matched the school record set by the 1984 team.
