Tough non-district schedules resulted in mixed results for Lufkin and The Woodlands, but both teams have the talent to live up to preseason expectations in the District 14-5A race.

The Panthers (1-3) travel to The Woodlands (2-2) for a 2 p.m. Saturday game Oct. 12 in what should be a crucial 14-5A meeting.

But Friday night's game in Lufkin between the Panthers and College Station A&M Consolidated (2-1) may have an equally big impact. The Tigers have the chance to launch themselves into the district title race early in the schedule and have already played three games decided by six or fewer points. Since Friday's game should be close, that could loom large in the experience department.

The district's remaining four teams -- Conroe (3-1), The Woodlands College Park (3-1), Conroe Oak Ridge (4-0), and Bryan (2-2) -- haven't played quite as daunting non-district schedules as Lufkin, The Woodlands, and A&M Consolidated and will have more to prove during the 14-5A slate.
