JACKSONVILLE -- Ennis quarterback Devin Smith threw for 391 yards and three touchdowns as the Lions handed the Jacksonville Indians their first loss of the season, 42-24, in the District 16-5A opener at the Tomato Bowl.

After fumbling on the game's opening drive, Ennis (2-2, 1-0) scored on its next five possessions en route to a 26-point halftime lead.

Smith threw touchdowns to Donta Thompson and Taylor Thompson, but Desten Johnson led all receivers with five catches for 165 yards, including a 68-yard catch-and-run touchdown.

Taylor Thompson also added a team-high 86 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

Jacksonville (3-1, 0-1) took an early lead with a Jorge Rios field goal that capped a 14-play, 92-yard drive.

Datavion Thacker returned a kickoff 90 yards for the Indians' only first-half touchdown.

Jacksonville quarterback Carter McCown completed 18 of 33 passes for 232 yards, including a touchdown and an interception.

DeMontrae Ragsdale led the Indians with five catches, and Christian Edwards led the Indians receivers with 56 yards and a touchdown.

Jacksonville is at Corsicana next week, while Ennis hosts Nacogdoches.
