The non-district fortunes have varied during the first several weeks of the season, but Maud, Detroit, and Overton appear to once again be the teams that should battle at the top of District 10-A Division II.

Maud, Detroit, and Overton beat up on each other during last year's district schedule, resulting in a trio of teams with 3-1 league records that shared the district crown. That appeared to be possibility again during the preseason, and not much has changed since then.

Maud had the best non-district slate and enters league play with a 4-2 record, while Detroit is 3-3. Both teams lost by 10 points to Simms Bowie.

Then there's Overton, which has faltered with an 0-5 record. But that mark could be deceiving considering the Mustangs' strength of schedule. Overton's first five opponents are a combined 20-7 and none has a record worse than 3-2. That should have the Mustangs -- who join Maud as double-digit losers to Beckville in September -- more than ready to bounce back in league play.

Cumby could be the darkhorse to spoil the playoff party for one of the three aforementioned teams. The Trojans are only 1-5, but their five losses came against teams that are a combined 20-10, none of which is under .500.
