East Texas Schools Claim Three of Class 3A’s Top Five Spots in Week 2 Associated Press Poll

Carthage retained the No. 1 spot and two more East Texas schools were ranked in the top five in Class 3A in this week's Associated Press high school football poll.

Gilmer (2-0), which beat Plano Prestonwood Christian 66-32 this past Friday, moved up one spot from third to second behind Carthage (2-0), which was a 45-17 winner at Lindale. Kilgore (1-0), which was off, moved from No. 6 to No. 5, trailing only Carthage, Gilmer, Navasota, and Argyle.

Pittsburg (2-0) and Chapel Hill (1-1) each received votes for the 3A top 10.

In Class 4A, Whitehouse (2-0) moved into a tie with Humble Summer Creek for fourth after the Wildcats, who beat Chapel Hill 42-34 in Tyler last Thursday, were ranked No. 5 a week ago. John Tyler (1-1) received votes after beating Lancaster 31-28.

Newton (2-0), which beat Liberty 22-17 last week, held the No. 1 spot in Class 2A since the preseason until slipping to No. 2 this week behind defending Division I state champion Cameron Yoe, which knocked out the Eagles in last year's state semifinals. No. 5 New Boston (2-0) and No. 7 Tatum (2-0) each moved up one spot following a 37-7 win at Pleasant Grove and a 45-0 win vs. Winnsboro, respectively.

Hughes Springs (2-0), Corrigan-Camden (2-0), and White Oak (2-0) received votes in the 2A poll.

In Class A, Tenaha (1-1) fell from No. 2 to No. 6 following a 17-10 loss to Class 2A Garrison. Alto (1-1) slipped from eighth to ninth despite a 47-27 win against 2A Groveton. West Sabine (2-0) was the top vote-getter outside the top 10.

Tyler Lee, which moved to 2-0 following a 42-30 win vs. Lufkin, was East Texas' lone Class 5A team to receive votes.
