No East Texas teams are ranked in TheOldCoach.com's Friday Night Football magazine Class 5A and Class 4A top 10's, but the region's smaller schools compensate.

The publication ranks three East Texas teams as preseason No. 1's: Carthage (3A), Newton (2A Division I), and Tenaha (1A Division II). FNF also has Gilmer (3A) and Alto (1A Division I) ranked No. 2, while perennial 2A Division I power Daingerfield is ranked No. 3.

While no East Texas 5A or 4A programs rank in the top 10, four were placed in the top 25 of their respective classifications. In 5A, FNF ranks Lufkin 14th and Longview 16th. John Tyler (17th) and Whitehouse (21st) are East Texas' highest-ranked 4A squads.

The magazine ranks the top 50 teams in 5A, 4A, and 3A, then ranks the top 25 in each division of 2A and 1A.

The 2012 season was the first since 2000 that an East Texas team did not win a football state championship. FNF magazine does not see that happening for a second year in a row. The publication picks Carthage (3A Division I), Gilmer (3A Division II), Newton (2A Division I), and Tenaha (1A Division II) to bring home state crowns.
