McKINNEY — Electra chased state-ranked Martin’s Mill for most of the second half and finally caught the Mustangs in the final minute en route to a 63-61 upset in the Class 2A Region II semifinals at McKinney North High School on Friday.

The Tigers (28-4) advanced to face No. 5 Muenster, a 59-48 winner over No. 4 Clarksville in the earlier semifinal, at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Tigers’ defense put the clamps on career 3-point scoring record holder Davis Moore, who hit his first attempt of the game, but missed the next four and didn’t score again. Electra had several heroes on the offensive end, including Andrew Marsh, whose 3-pointer with 3:05 remaining fueled the Tigers’ comeback from a nine-point deficit.

Drake Cooper, who had a team-high 19, connected on 3 of 4 free throws in the final 1:51, but it was reserve Zairy Hargrove who brought the crowd to its feet with a 3-pointer that closed the gap to 57-56 with 1:27 to play.

Ironically for Martin’s Mill, senior Logan Jenkins, who led all scorers with 32, missed two free throws with four seconds left and the Mustangs down 62-60. Before those attempts, Jenkins connected on all 10 free throws he shot in the final period.

Electra post Xavier Waggoner had a pair of key three-point plays, including a rim-shaking dunk halfway through the second quarter that closed the Mustangs’ lead to 13-11.

Moore finished his career with 564 three-pointers made.
