8.D.J. Dean

  • Athlete (quarterback, defensive back)
  • Newton
  • 5-11, 180
  • committed to Utah; additional offers from Arkansas State, Baylor, Central Arkansas, Illinois, Lamar, McNeese State, North Texas, SFA, Tulane, UTEP, UTSA, Washington State (per Newton coach W.T. Johnston)

A two-way standout who leads Newton’s offense into the 2012 season from his quarterback position, D.J. Dean should garner more and more recruiting interest as his senior season progresses.

Dean threw for almost 1,300 yards and ran for nearly 700 yards, accounting for 23 total touchdowns. He also picked off five passes from the secondary. Newton’s 2012 campaign hinges on the success of Dean and backfield mates Kevin Shorter and Brandon Johnson, who combined to run for 2,400 yards as sophomores last season.

Dean committed to Utah on July 27 and will likely play cornerback if his commitment holds. But with nine Division I FBS offers already in his pocket, Dean will likely add several more, especially from schools closer to home as his commitment to a Pac-12 school undoubtedly will draw attention.

The ETSN 25 countdown so far ...
