Demontrai Lewis will be the leader of a Lufkin defensive front that could get the Panthers beyond the first round of the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Combined with fellow lineman D’Vante Botley (6-4, 250), another potential college recruit, the Pack will have a fearsome front line.

Lewis was a force off the edge as a junior, when he had 48 tackles and eight sacks during the Panthers’ regular season. That included a mammoth game against John Tyler, which suffered through 15 of his tackles, including an impressive seven for loss.

Lewis achieved all of that -- and the state’s Right Guard Defensive Player of the Year Award -- despite being deaf. He communicates through a signing specialist, who accompanies him on the sideline.

That also hasn’t hampered his recruitment. Lewis holds three Division I offers and should only get more as his senior season progresses.
