Last season, the Pine Tree Pirates did something they hadn't accomplished since 2001. And that's make the playoffs.

The goal in head coach Kerry Lane's third season is to build on that success.

With 11 returning starters in 2018, the Pirates are No. 10 in ETSN.fm's Preseason Class 6A/5A Poll.

Pine Tree, despite getting to the postseason, won only three games last year; against Sulphur Springs, Mount Pleasant, and Hallsville, who were a combined 8-22.

Those three schools and defending league champion Marshall remain in Pine Tree's district, 9-5A Division II, along with newcomers Jacksonville, Lindale, Nacogdoches, and Whitehouse.

Pine Tree should be in good shape on the offensive side of the ball with seven starters coming back.

The Pirates will need to find a quarterback, but they will be deep at the skill positions. Fullback/tight end Keshon Williams (Texas State commit), receivers JJ Sparkman and Davon Coleman, and running backs Sylvandan Stewart, Gabe Nelson, and Jordan Smith give Pine Tree a ton of options.

Defensive lineman Keith Burkes will lead the way on the other side of the ball.
