Few programs in all of East Texas have the successful track record the Newton Eagles possess.

And with several key impact performers returning from last season's regional semifinalist team, Newton is poised to have yet another championship-caliber season.

The Eagles check in at No. 2 in the ETSN.fm Preseason Class 3A Poll.

Since head coach W.T. Johnston took over the program prior to the 2011 season, Newton has compiled a record of 54-14, and has reached at least the state semifinal round of the playoffs twice.

Newton returns 16 starters this season (7 offensive, 9 defensive) as the Eagles look to repeat as District 10-3A Division II champions.

Among the returners on offense are quarterback Brock Barbay, running back Broderick Spikes and receiver Kirkland Foster.

Defensively, the Eagles welcome back lineman Devian Kennebrew and linebacker Blake Kelly.
