WILLS POINT -- Athens continued its eye-opening start to the 2013-14 basketball season with a pair of impressive victories Friday at the Wills Point Tournament.

Anthony Sanders and Ryan Jefferson teamed up to scored 54 points to lead the Hornets to a 72-51 victory against host school Wills Point. The win pushed Athens to 11-0 on the season and followed a 70-51 victory vs. Edgewood earlier in the day.

Sanders scored 28 and dished out nine assists, while Jefferson added 26 points and eight rebounds against Wills Point. Travon Fuller and Courtland Lyons chipped in with five points apiece.

Jah Golden's 21 points led Wills Point, which got 11 points from Hunter Sanford and seven each from Tre' Smith and Ranger Wilcoxson.

Sanders had 24 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds against Edgewood, which was led by Jackson Tyner's 20 points and Tyler Germany's 14.

Jefferson contributed 19 points and six boards in the win. Lyons had 11 points.

Athens plays Trinity Christian Academy at 8:20 p.m. Saturday in the tournament championship.

Whitehouse Drops Two in Burkburnett Tournament

BURKBURNETT -- Spencer Shaw's 24 points and Patrick Mahomes' 13 points weren't enough as Whitehouse fell 75-68 to Lubbock Monterey on Friday at the Burkburnett Tournament.

The loss dropped Whitehouse to 9-2 following a 77-61 defeat to host team Burkburnett earlier in the day.

Brady Hill scored 10 points and Jake Parker added eight in the loss to Monterey.

Shaw led Whitehouse with 14 points against Burkburnett. Parker dropped in 10 points, while Mahomes and Hill had nine and eight, respectively. Isiah Clark scored seven points. Jacob Lundmark had six.

Whitehouse plays Plainview at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Martin's Mill Downs Palmer

MARTIN'S MILL -- Hunter Conway and Logan Jenkins led Martin's Mill to a 50-29 non-district win against Palmer on Friday night.

Conway and Jenkins scored 15 points apiece as Martin's Mill improved to 10-2 on the season. Spencer Hines and July Latimer scored six points apiece.

Harmony Tops Winona

WINONA -- Winona suffered its first loss of the season Friday when visiting Harmony edged the Ladycats 46-42.

Jamece Gulley led Winona (12-1, 1-1) with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and seven steals, while Bailey Daniels scored eight points, including two three-pointers.

Winona's Darrisha Crawford had six points and six rebounds. Teammate Kawaii Gordon chipped in four points and seven boards.

The win pushed Harmony to 2-0 in district.

Mount Vernon Holds Off Clarksville

CLARKSVILLE -- Mount Vernon upended Clarksville 47-40 in Friday's district matchup.

Emma Strickland hit key free throws down the stretch and led Mount Vernon's defensive effort, which limited Clarksville to 18 first-half points and only 26 points through three quarters.

The win pushed Mount Vernon to 2-0 in district, while Clarksville fell to 1-1.

Gary Handles Overton

GARY -- Amber Gage scored 15 points to lead Gary to a 42-31 win vs. Overton in the Gary Tournament on Friday.

Meagan Sewell scored 12 points for the Ladycats, who got four points and 15 rebounds from Kristina Mayo. Ryley Beckham added two points, six boards, three assists, and two steals.

Harleton Beats Beckville

HARLETON -- Kaylee Knowlton dropped 18 points to lead Harleton to a 35-25 district win against Beckville on Friday.

Harleton shot 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, while Beckville (4-8, 1-1) struggled at 3-for-13.

Devin Woodall's eight points and four steals led Beckville, which got three points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists from Cassidi Whitaker.
