Friday Basketball Roundup: Pleasant Grove, Canton, Cushing Girls Grab Playoff Wins + San Augustine Boys Win District Playoff

HALLSVILLE -- The 22nd-ranked Pleasant Grove Lady Hawks cruised to a 62-45 win over Bullard in their Class 3A Region II area-round playoff Friday night.

Pleasant Grove (27-4) advanced to the regional quarterfinals where it will face No. 12 Canton at 6 p.m. Tuesday from Longview High School's Lobo Coliseum.

Renee Walker and Brette Wacha led the way for the Lady Hawks, each knocking down three 3-pointers. Walker finished with 22 points, while Wacha added 19.

Bullard (25-8) was led in defeat by Lexi Abercrombie, who finished with 11 points. Maddy Slayter and Lexi Kirgan added eight points apiece.

Canton Survives in Overtime

FORNEY -- The 12th-ranked Canton Eaglettes scored a 47-45 overtime win over Quinlan Ford on Friday in their Class 3A Region II area-round playoff.

Kassidy Wilkerson led Canton (26-7) with 17 points, which included three 3-pointers. Destiny Dollenger added eight points, while Holly Raitz, Lilly Nelson and Courtney Roberts chipped in with six points apiece.

Martin's Mill Dispatches of Axtell

ELKHART -- The top-ranked Martin's Mill Lady Mustangs had no trouble in a 57-22 rout of Axtell on Friday in their Class A Division I Region III area-round playoff.

Cheyenne Brown led the way for Martin's Mill (31-2) with 24 points. Alyssa Pate added 15 points for the defending state champion Lady Mustangs.

Martin's Mill will face Mart in the regional quarterfinals Tuesday in Corsicana. The time has yet to be determined.

Cushing Too Much For San Augustine

LUFKIN -- The Cushing Galkats rolled to a 47-34 win over San Augustine in their Class A Division I Region III area-round playoff Friday night.

Cushing (28-4) will face district rival Wells next week in the regional quarterfinals.

Mackenzie Tucker paced Cushing with 24 points. Kayla Moore added 14 points, while Sammy Jo Brashears had eight in the win.

BOYS

San Augustine Wins District Tiebreaker

LUFKIN -- The 14th-ranked San Augustine Wolves defeated No. 15 West Sabine 72-59 on Friday night in game to decide the No. 1 seed from District 23-A Division I for the playoffs.

San Augustine (26-8) was led by Jarvis Smith's 24 points. Dez Randle added 22 points, while JD Brown finished with 10 in the win.

The Wolves will receive a first-round bye in the playoffs.

Tatum Captures Warm-Up Win

ARP -- The second-ranked Tatum Eagles tuned up for the playoffs with a 66-52 win over Melissa on Friday night in a warm-up contest.

Tatum (29-4) was led by Chaston Brooks, who finished with 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Donovan Centers added 12 points, six boards, three steals and two assists, while Martin Williams had 11 points and three rebounds.

The Eagles will face Frankston in the first round of the playoffs next week.
