Friday’s Boys UIL State Track Meet Roundup: Texas High Wins Class 4A Team Championship

AUSTIN -- On the strength of its two relay teams and the blazing speed of Baylor signee Kevin Harris, Texas High captured the Class 4A state championship of the UIL State Track and Field Meet on Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

The Tigers finished with 40 points as a team, two more than runner-up Fort Bend Marshall.

Texas High took first-place finishes in both the 400 and 800 meter relays, which consisted of Jacorian Walker, Treveon Walker, Travonne Monk and Harris. The Tigers' time of 1:24.26 in the 800 set a new 4A state record, while the 400 relay team's time of 40.41 was enough to make the Tigers 2-for-2 in their relay events.

Harris did his part individually as well, narrowly edging out Humble Summer Creek's Aaron Sharp to win gold in the 200 meter dash. Harris took first with a time of 20.92, while Sharp finished at 20.97.

Mount Pleasant's K.D. Cannon, a Baylor football signee, beat out Aledo's Ryan Newsome to capture gold in the 100 meter dash. Cannon's mark of 10.32 was good enough to top Newsome's time of 10.51.

Nacogdoches 800 meter relay team of Alex Gregory, Jamar Woodard, L.J. Barnes and Brandon Jones took bronze with a time of 1:25.16.

In Class 2A, Daingerfield and Tatum tied for second place overall with 38 points apiece, well behind state champion Rosebud-Lott (61).

Tatum's Jaylen Shans-Sheppard earned gold in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.43. Daingerfield's 800 meter relay team of Denzel Mims, Calvin Bryant, Jordan Miles and Keynon Whetstone took first with a time of 1:26.94; Newton and Tatum finished third and fourth, respectively. in the event.

Tatum's Jordan Nelson got second in the triple jump with a length of 46-11.75, while Hemphill's Emre Hamilton placed third at 46-09.25.

Daingerfield's 400 meter relay squad earned a second-place nod at 41.94, just ahead of third-place Newton, which finished at 41.98.
