GILMER -- Gilmer's 22nd consecutive victory might have been its easiest.

Zac Spears threw four touchdowns in two quarters and Gilmer held Melissa to 36 yards of total offense in the Buckeyes' 60-0 shutout Friday night in the District 5-4A Division II opener.

Gilmer (6-0, 1-0) set the school record for most consecutive wins. The Buckeyes, undefeated state champs a year ago, won 21 in a row over the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

Spears completed 9 of 13 passes for 171 yards and found three different receivers for touchdowns in the first half. He connected with LaMarcus Morton for two scores, while hitting Zod Heath and Ryen Lawhorn for the other touchdowns in the half.

The halftime score was also the final score, as the clock ran continuously in the second half and the game ended shortly after 9:30 p.m.

Devin Smith, Kelton Collier, DeMarco Boyd (two) all scored touchdowns on the ground for the Buckeyes, who travel to face Canton on Friday.Gilmer visits Canton Friday, while Melissa ventures to Rains.
