GILMER – Kelton Collier led eight different Gilmer running backs with 142 yards, as the third-ranked Buckeyes opened the season with a 2-0 mark after a 35-19 win over Pine Tree inside Jeff Traylor Stadium on Friday night.

In total, Gilmer eclipsed 300 yards on the ground, building a 29-0 lead at halftime.

Demarco Boyd finished with 85 yards of total offense, scoring twice in the first half on jaunts of 1 and 5 yards. Collier added a 21-yard score. Zac Spears, who finished with 156 passing yards, capped the first half scoring with a 28-yard toss to Red Jones. Cambron Granville tacked on 32 rushing yards and a 1-yard score.

For Pine Tree, which scored 19 unanswered points in the second half, quarterback Daniel Bonamy finished 18 of 29 for 243 yards with scoring throws of 18 and 46 yards. Shaffer Russell added 93 yards on the ground for Pine Tree, including a 3-yard touchdown run, and hauled in two passes for 13 yards.

Bonamy hit Trey Pruitt four times, totaling 110 yards, including a 46-yard catch-and-run touchdown. Jordan Phillips hauled in seven passes for 85 yards for Pine Tree, which fell to 1-1 on the season.

Collier scored on a 21-yard scamper in between touchdown runs from Boyd to put Gilmer ahead 21-0 midway through the second quarter. Spears and Jones connected for 28 yards inside the final minute of the opening half with Collier punching in the two-point conversion for a commanding 29-0 Buckeye lead.

Pine Tree opened the second half with an 80-yard scoring drive with Bonamy and Pruitt hooking up for an 18-yard score. Shaffer closed out the third quarter with a 3-yard run, pulling Pine Tree to with 29-13 heading into the fourth.

Bonamy found Pruitt outside and the speedy Pruitt cashed in his second score with a 46-yard run, pulling the Pirates to within 10 points early in the fourth quarter.

Granville, a two-way standout for the Buckeyes, capped the Buckeyes’ scoring and win with a 1-yard jaunt with 7:53 to play.

Gilmer hosts Tatum on Friday, while Kilgore travels to Pirate Stadium.
