Great East Texas Shootout, Girls: No. 1 Martin’s Mill Cruises Past Athens + More

BROWNSBORO -- Behind the duo of Cheyenne Brown and Haily Jenkins, the Martin's Mill Lady Mustangs defeated the Athens Lady Hornets 68-25 in the second round of the Great East Texas Shootout in Brownsboro on Thursday.

Brown scored 14 first-quarter points to give Martin;s Mill (10-1) a 28-5 advantage, and Jenkins had nine in the second quarter to give the Lady Mustangs a comfortable 45-15 halftime lead.

Taylor Munns added 10 third-quarter points for the No. 1 Lady Mustangs as they outscored Athens 21-2 in the third to build a 66-17 lead.

Brown, a 6-foot sophomore, finished with 26 points, while McNeese State-bound Jenkins tallied 12 points.

"It's always nice when you can get your post player involved," said Martin's Mill coach Doug Barncastle of Brown. "(Brown) has been sick and missed a game. So it was good to see her scoring and getting up and down the floor. (Jenkins) looked good. She's having a little trouble moving laterally, and I think she's lost some of her shot. I keep telling her she needs to get in the gym to fix that."

"(Munns) is kind of our x-factor. She's been playing good basketball lately. With Jenkins being limited early, I think (Munns) realized she had to take up some of the scoring and defensive roles. Now with Jenkins back, she's still playing with that mentality. She's always been a defensive player, so it's nice to see her taking a bigger role."

Athens (5-6) outscored Martin's Mill 8-2 in the fourth quarter thanks to Caridad Aguilera and Demi Cumby, who combined for 14 points in the loss.

Martin's Mill faces Snook in Friday's 1:30 p.m. third-round game in the high school gym. Athens plays in the elementary gym tomorrow at 4:30 against an opponent yet to be determined.
