Hard-Hitting Garland Sachse Rolls to 14-5 Win Over Tyler Lee in Game 1
TYLER -- Tyler Lee pitcher Ross Himes hit Garland Sache's Eric Williams with the first pitch of the game Friday night. It was an omen of things to come for the Red Raiders.
Sachse used a six-run fourth inning to take control in a 14-5 rout of Tyler Lee in Game 1 of their Class 5A Region II bi-district playoff series at Mike Carter Field. The series resumes with Game 2 at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sachse High School. A third game, if necessary, would follow.
The Mustangs (19-6-1) pounded Tyler Lee (16-10) pitching to the tune of 16 hits, seven of which went for extra bases.
Jonathan Soberanes led the way, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two doubles and four RBIs. Jeremy Hadley was 3-for-5 with a triple, double, four RBIs and two runs scored. Reed Enna and Kyle Weatherly had two hits and two RBIs apiece, while Williams had two hits and scored four runs.
Josh Lewis got the win for Sachse. He allowed five runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Himes, starting instead of Lee ace Zach Flanagan who is expected to pitch Game 2, suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Lee was led offensively by Trace Reed, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Flanagan and Ben Romines each had two hits and an RBI.
After Lee cut Sache's lead to 4-2, the Mustangs exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth to build an insurmountable 10-2 lead. The big blows were Hadley's three-run triple and Soberanes' triple that brought in two more.
