Of the 10 districts that had four East Texas teams in the playoffs, three came out of the bi-district around better than .500.

The district at the top? Not the least bit surprising: District 16-3A, the "District of Doom."

Arguably the state's toughest district in any classification, 16-3A went 4-0 against District 15-3A, which was also one of the region's 10 leagues with four playoff teams. The District of Doom outscored 15-3A by a staggering margin of 168 points (201-33). Two games were shutouts -- Gilmer over Mineola (52-0) and Gladewater over Canton (48-0), while Kilgore allowed a lone score in a 49-7 win against Van.

Undefeated 15-3A champion Athens finished the season 10-1 after Chapel Hill doubled up the Hornets in impressive fashion, 52-26.

Two other districts went 3-1, including one led by a former member of the original incarnation of the District of Doom.

Carthage's 49-6 drubbing of Mexia, which trailed 49-0 before halftime, spearheaded District 20-3A's 3-1 performance against District 19-3A. Jasper notched a 44-34 win against Palestine, while Center beat Groesbeck 45-21. As expected, Fairfield hammered Diboll 60-6, which turned out to be 19-3A's only win against 20-3A.

In Class 2A, East Texas got a 3-1 performance from District 8-2A Division I, which houses perennial powers Daingerfield and New Boston. Those teams beat Eustace (34-7) and Lone Oak (61-39), respectively, while Redwater downed Winnsboro 27-7. District 8-2A D-I's only loss was Queen City's 41-14 decision to Malakoff.

Which districts with four East Texas playoff participants fared the worst? Obviously the aforementioned 15-3A went 0-4. Each of the region's Class 4A districts -- 14-4A and 16-4A -- went 1-3. Mansfield Legacy (def. John Tyler) and McKinney North (def. Texas High) prevented an anticipated all-East Texas second-round matchup between Cujo and the Tigers.

The only East Texas 4A teams to win -- undefeated Whitehouse, which survived a serious Arlington Seguin upset bid in overtime, and Sulphur Springs, which beat Denison last week -- meet each other this week, so the region will have only one 4A team of its eight playoff participants remaining come Thanksgiving week. Whitehouse won 61-22 at Sulphur Springs on Sept. 13.
