DAINGERFIELD -- Running back Bo McEntire scored four times and Hughes Springs' defense held Daingerfield to minus-nine yards in a 24-0 victory Thursday at Mickey Mayne Tiger Stadium.

With the win, the Mustangs snapped a 55-year streak of losing to the Tigers. That's one way to generate momentum ahead of a big Week 2 game against Arp.

"The schools are six miles apart," head coach Chris Edwards said. "They have a storied tradition here at Daingerfield. I graduated from here. Football is a big deal, and I think we kind of put ourselves on the map tonight. It's a big deal at Hughes Springs, too.

"Where we go from here, we'll take it one week at a time, but I couldn't be more proud of my kids."

Hughes Springs (1-0) presented new offensive schemes. Edwards is a big proponent of the T-formation, but the team utilized some pistol formations as well as its classic looks.

McEntire carried the ball 17 times for 63 yards and all four of the Mustangs' touchdowns. Weak in the kicking department, the squad failed to convert two-point conversions after the first three touchdowns and botched the hold on its point after attempt just after scoring for the final time.

While McEntire headlined, Dedrick Hill recorded a team-best 67 yards on six carries. Quarterback Alex Bruce got a net of 30 yards on nine touches and also completed 4 of 6 passes for 27 yards.

Daingerfield (0-1) had a disastrous night on offense.

Starting quarterback Jakauri Woods was lost late in the first half with a torso injury. He ultimately walked off the field under his own power and went to the hospital for X-rays.

The Tigers' center and deep snapper lost 73 yards on six low snaps and were largely responsible for nine of 10 Tigers' fumbles in the contest. More than a dozen other snaps were delivered high and had to be pulled down by Woods and subsequently Reggie Jeter.

Consequently, Daingerfield never got into any rhythm. It had to wait for its quarterbacks to reset before it could start its play call, and Hughes Springs' defensive front often times had more than a bonus second to collapse the offensive line and swallow the opposing skill players.

The end result was five punts, a turnover on downs, an interception thrown by Woods, a pick by Jeter and a fumble lost after a bad snap in its four-possession loss.

"We're trying to force turnovers and make them make mistakes," Edwards said. "They had some bad luck with snaps. We're not going to complain about it. We're not going to take away from it."

Woods' interception thrown killed Daingerfield's opening drive on the heels of a Hughes Springs punt. Cornerback Ty Menefee got the pick at the Tigers' 34-yard line and returned it to the eight.

McEntire cashed in the next play.

The Mustangs' third drive was plagued by its own low snaps from the center, so the team punted.

A low Daingerfield snap killed its next posession. McEntire capped a nine-play, 70-yard counter drive with a 5-yard run for a 12-0 halftime lead.

The Tigers got the ball to start the second half. Their first snap of the second act was low, created a bad exchange and was lost to Hughes Springs linebacker Clark Black at their own 21-yard line.

McEntire converted fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line seven plays later.

The third quarter ended with a bad Daingerfield snap on a punt attempt for a 17-yard loss and a Mustangs' possession just outside the red zone. McEntire made Daingerfield pay once again on a 2-yard score to complete an eight-play, 22-yard drive.

"We just came out and played hard," McEntire said. "We had a good week at practice. Then, my blockers were on fire. It's easy for me to score when they're out there blocking."

Hughes Springs produced 194 yards of offense to Daingerfield's minus-nine yards and recorded 10 first downs to the Tigers' five.

While the Mustangs travel to Arp next Thursday. Daingerfield will be on the road next Friday against Atlanta.

"It was our first win against Daingerfield in a long time," offensive lineman and linebacker Sean Stark said. "It felt great."
