ELYSIAN FIELDS -- Hughes Springs was at it again Friday night at Jacket Stadium.

The 10th-ranked Mustangs racked up 406 rushing yards en route to a 61-0 shutout of Elysian Fields to improve to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in District 9-2A Division II.

Hughes Springs travels to DeKalb on Friday before closing the regular season at home against Waskom in a contest that will likely feature undefeated teams playing for the district championship.

Fredrick Hopkins ran for 195 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries, while Kane Sampson ran five times for 87 yards and a score. Michael Martinez added 10 carries for 85 yards and Chris Royal ran for a touchdown.

Sampson had a huge game on defense, where he recorded seven tackles and returned two interceptions for touchdowns (19, 98).

Quarterback Chad McKinney completed 3 of 4 passes for 52 yards and two touchdowns -- a 29-yarder to Martinez and a 14-yarder to Hunter Smith, who caught two passes for 23 yards.

The shutout was the second in a row for the Hughes Springs defense, which has yielded 14 or fewer points six times in eight games.

Elysian Fields lost its second consecutive game to fall to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in district entering the Jackets' home game against New Diana, which should be pivotal in the league playoff race.
