Carthage’s Jarrod McLin Picks Up Offer From UTSA

Jarrod McLin's week started off with a bang.

UTSA awarded the senior Carthage defensive end a college football scholarship opportunity Monday. It joins Louisiana-Lafayette in the mix.

McLin confirmed the news to ETSN.fm.

The Roadrunners are no stranger to Carthage. Former Bulldogs quarterback Blake Bogenschutz signed with the school after winning the 2013 Class 3A Division I state championship against Kilgore, played in games as a true freshman and is in consideration to start this season.

McLin (6-4, 212) helped push Carthage from a 1-5 start last season all the way to a share of the District 9-4A Division I title and an appearance in the area round of the playoffs.

UTSA has made big strides since beginning competition in 2011.

The program hired former Miami head coach Larry Coker in the buildup. He led the team to back-to-back winning seasons in 2012 and 2013.

Coker's 2014 season was a mix of up-and-down performances, hindered by injuries, on the way to a 4-8 finish.

Signature performances came in an opening win at Houston, a three-point loss to Arizona and a 34-27 win against North Texas in the campaign finale.

UTSA might have the toughest non-conference schedule in the country this season. It opens the 2015 season against Arizona, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Colorado State in consecutive weeks.

Lufkin native JaBryce Taylor will join Bogenschutz in San Antonio after a stint at Navarro Junior College. Former John Tyler defensive back Deandre Williams also will be on campus as a preferred walk-on.

McLin, like all 2016 football prospects, will become eligible to sing with any program that offers him on Feb. 3.
