John Tyler's 35-21 win over Lufkin last Friday, coupled with losses from the top two teams, launched the Lions into the No. 1 spot into the latest Associated Press high school football poll, released today.

JT was helped by losses from No. 1 Denton Guyer to Cedar Hill, 54-28, and No. 2 Cedar Park to Austin Westlake, 21-7. The Lions have not been ranked No. 1 in the poll since 1997.

In 3A, Gilmer entered the poll and is tied at No. 9 with Carthage, which dropped from No. 3 after its 34-30 loss to Jacksonville last Friday.

In 2A, Tatum moved up to the No. 5 spot from No. 6.
