The John Tyler Lions enjoyed the top spot in the Associated Press Class 4A Top 10 poll for one week before losing to Lancaster on Sept. 7, but after Lancaster's loss and the Lions' sixth-straight win, JT is creeping back toward the top.

The Lions (7-1) are No. 2 in this week's AP rankings, up one spot from last week, after their 59-7 domination of District 16-4A foe Jacksonville last Friday. JT received one first-place vote and is 43 points behind top-ranked Pearland Dawson.

There was no change in this week's 3A poll. Kilgore (7-0) remains No. 4 after a 31-2 victory over Chapel Hill, and Carthage (7-2) stayed ninth following a huge, 49-31 win over Jasper.

In Class 2A, Newton is still No. 3 after a 41-6 win over Anahuac and New Boston (8-0) remained No. 5 after a 58-22 rout Hooks. Hughes Springs (8-0) moved up a spot to No. 9 following its impressive 55-14 win over Elysian Fields. Troup (7-1) dropped from the rankings after a 38-28 loss to White Oak.

Joaquin (8-0), which defeated Beckville 30-19 last week, is still ranked fifth in Class A. Alto (7-1), coming off a 36-12 rout of Grapeland, remains at No. 8.
