The top spots in the latest Associated Press Class 5A poll belong to East Texas. John Tyler is the No. 1 team in 5A, followed by District 16-5A mate Lufkin at No. 2.

John Tyler (2-0) delivering a solid performance last Friday night in handing rival Longview -- the preseason No. 3 team in 5A -- a 41-25 victory at Lobo Stadium. The Lions, who play crosstown rival Tyler Lee this week, were last ranked No. 1 in the 4A poll back in 2012, but only for a week.

Meanwhile, Lufkin (2-0) is on the heels of a 43-19 victory over Class 6A Tyler Lee, which it dominated in the second half. The Panthers will face the state of Louisiana's top-ranked team in 3A -- River Ridge John Curtis -- Saturday afternoon in Shreveport as part of the annual Battle on the Border at Independence Stadium.

Whitehouse (2-0) received votes in the 5A poll, as did Longview despite beginning the season 0-2 for the first time since 1963.

In Class 4A, Gilmer (2-0) is up two spots to No. 5 after its 68-20 thrashing of Pine Tree last Friday night. Defending 3A Division I champion Carthage (1-1) remained ninth after its 22-13 defeat of Lindale. Gilmer travels to Tatum this week, while Carthage hosts Nacogdoches.

Gladewater (2-0), Tatum (1-0) and Van (2-0) all received votes.

Corrigan-Camden (2-0) is ranked No. 5 in the Class 3A poll following its 64-12 rout of Groveton. Waskom dropped one spot to No. 8 despite a 63-12 victory over Paul Pewitt last Friday. Malakoff (2-0), a 39-12 winner over Daingerfield, entered the poll at No. 10.

Corrigan-Camden plays at Trinity this week, Waskom hosts Hughes Springs, and Malakoff plays at Kerens.

White Oak (2-0), Arp (2-0), New Boston (1-1) and Newton (1-1) received votes in 3A.

In Class 2A, Tenaha (2-0) remained at No. 3 following a 21-15 road victory at Bullard Brook Hill. The Tigers host Shelbyville on Friday night.

Alto (2-0) and West Sabine (2-0) both received votes.
