John Tyler High School and the University of Houston have become great recruiting partners in recent years, and that trend continued on Sunday afternoon.

Lions 2018 defensive end/outside linebacker Dekalen Goodson announced via Twitter that he has committed to Houston.

Goodson (6-2, 215) became the fifth East Texas recruit in the 2018 class to offer up a commitment. He chose the Cougars over additional offers from Louisiana-Lafayette, Mississippi State, SMU, Texas State, and Tulane.

Houston has signed four John Tyler players since 2013. The Cougars brought in Greg Ward and Tyus Bowser in 2013, Braylon Jones in 2015, and signed Bryson Smith this past February.

As a junior, Goodson recorded 70 tackles, 11 sacks, forced a fumble and recovered two fumbles.

John Tyler held six of 13 opponents last season to no more than two touchdowns and averaged 24.6 points against per game en route to a co-district championship, an appearance in the Class 6A regional semifinals and an overall record of 11-2.

Houston has been a common destination for local players in recent seasons, but any new players to the program will be signing up to play for Major Applewhite rather than Tom Herman.

Herman left the program between Houston’s regular season and the bowl game to become the next head coach at Texas. The Cougars had posted a 9-3 record and went on to lose the Las Vegas Bowl.

Goodson, like all college football prospects currently in their junior year of high school, will become eligible to sign with any school that offers him in December.
