John Tyler senior DeQuante Woods remembers last season's stunning loss to crosstown rival Tyler Lee, and there was nothing he could do about it. Literally.

"Last year I didn't get to play because I was on the injury list, so I just came out with a huge chip on my shoulder and played my best," he said.

And his best was good enough to earn the Lions defensive back ETSN.fm Dairy Queen Defensive Player of the Week honors. Woods made six tackles, which included a sack in JT's 21-0 shutout of Lee last Friday.

But it was his 40-yard interception return for a touchdown as time expired in the third quarter that put the finishing touches on the Lions' dominant defensive effort.

“That’s going to be in my head for a long, long time,” Woods said of his defensive score. ”I just read the receiver’s route and just caught the ball ... I knew I had to score for my team.”

JT pitched its second shutout against Lee in three seasons, holding the Red Raiders to 139 total yards and just seven first downs.

"We just came out and played John Tyler defense ... the right way," Woods said.

The Lions (2-1) return to the field Friday on the road at Mesquite Horn.
