KIRBYVILLE -- Texas-bound senior Kevin Shorter had another huge game to power No. 2 Newton to a 45-8 road blowout of Kirbyville on Friday night.

The versatile 6-foot, 190-pounder ran 11 times for 76 yards and a touchdown, but did even more damage catching the ball. Shorter snagged five passes for 125 yards and two scores to give him 201 yards from scrimmage and three total touchdowns.

Fellow senior running back Brandon Johnson ran for 76 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. Junior quarterback Roney Elam completed 7 of 9 passes for 155 yards and the two touchdowns to Shorter.

Newton, now 5-0 overall and 2-0 in District 10-2A Division I, has outscored its last three opponents 145-16. Shorter has 819 yards from scrimmage and 12 total touchdowns through his first five contests.

The Eagles travel to Winnie East Chambers on Friday night.
