SAN ANTONIO -- The LaPoynor Flyerettes have been ranked No. 2 for most of the girls basketball season, trailing only Martin's Mill.

LaPoynor will get the opportunity to rectify that after its 44-41 win over Claude in their Class 2A state semifinal Friday morning at the Alamodome.

Separated by just 32 miles, LaPoynor (34-2) and Martins' Mill (39-1) will face off for the title at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Martin's Mill defeated Mason, 78-45, in the other semifinal Friday.

LaPoynor led for most of the game, but had to survive one final possession from Claude (31-5) that could've sent it into overtime.

Te'Aire Hambrick led LaPoynor with 14 points to go with 11 rebounds. Jas Mitchell added 10 points and nine boards, while Jayla Hawkins chipped in with seven points, 13 rebounds, four steals, and four blocks.

Claude was led by Jenna Cooper, who had 19 points and 22 rebounds.

LaPoynor took the lead for good early in the second quarter when Mitchell's 3-pointer made it a 15-13 Flyerettes advantage.
