ARLINGTON -- Second verse, same as the first.

Longview and Mansfield Lake Ridge have met twice in two years in the playoffs, with both games coming down to the closing seconds. And each time, the Lobos were on the wrong end of the drama that is Texas high school football.

Cody Jenkins missed a potential game-tying field goal from 36 yards with six seconds remaining, allowing Lake Ridge to escape AT&T Stadium with a thrilling 56-53 win in Saturday night's Class 5A Division I Region II final.

Lake Ridge (14-0), which ousted Longview (11-3) after a Lobos missed field goal as time expired in last season's area-round clash, advanced to the semifinals where it will face defending state champion Aledo (13-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday from the Birdville Fine Arts and Athletic Complex in North Richland Hills.

"Longview is the best team we've played all season," said Lake Ridge senior quarterback and Texas Tech commit Jett Duffey. "They came out here and they balled. They put their hearts on the field, and I'm sad to see they had to end to their season. They came out and competed just like we competed, and they're amazing."

Lake Ridge became the first school from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to score at least 50 points on Longview in the program's 106-year history. But it was Longview's fourth-down sack of Duffey with 3:21 remaining that gave the Lobos a shot.

Longview took over at its own 47 armed with two timeouts. Four consecutive Tylan Miller rushes netted 23 yards to set up first-and-10 at the Lake Ridge 30. The Lobos senior running back later converted a third-and-3 with a 4-yard run to the 19 with 33 seconds remaining.

But Longview senior quarterback Michael Ross fired three consecutive incompletions to the end zone, setting up Jenkins' field-goal attempt.

"We weren't really going to play for the field goal, we were playing to win," said Longview coach John King. "We got in a situation where we felt like we had to kick it. Things weren't there, we had a chance to get a couple of balls, and we didn't get them. But we were going to play to win. We had the ball, we had the chance. It was ours to win, and we didn't do it."

Lake Ridge, which came into Saturday averaging almost 70 points per game in the playoffs, racked up 574 yards of offense on the night, and twice took two-score leads in the fourth quarter only to see Longview respond in each instance.

Duffey finished 21-of-29 passing for 255 yards and two touchdowns, and added 134 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. His 2-yard touchdown run with 4:36 remaining gave Lake Ridge a 56-46 lead.

Longview then attempted an unsuccessful onside kick, which was recovered by Lake Ridge at the Lobos' 49.

"We did an onside kick, and the kids wanted to do it, and I wanted to do it. We had a hard time slowing them down, so we tried to get the ball with four and a half minutes. We didn't get it, but we got a stop."

Lake Ridge senior running back Duke Carter, a Louisiana-Monroe pledge, carried 33 times for 164 yards and four touchdowns. His 17-yard score gave the Eagles a 49-38 lead with 9:26 remaining in the fourth.

It was the first time all night either team held a lead of more than seven points.

"Duke Carter is a baller," Duffey said. "He's a competitor and he has the heart of a lion, and he always does what he needs to do. We leaned on him, we needed the yards, and he got the yards. Our offensive linemen had an amazing push, and they did everything that they needed to do."

Longview turned to Ross to stay in the game. On third-and-7, he found a wide-open Braylynn Anthony on a wheel route for a 74-yard touchdown. Ross' two-point conversion pass to Jacorian Jones brought Longview's deficit to 49-46 with 8:27 to play.

Lake Ridge then set out on a 13-play scoring drive that ended with Duffey's second rushing touchdown of the game.

But on the first play of the ensuing series, Ross hooked up with senior receiver Chris Braggs for a 71-yard touchdown to cut the Lake Ridge lead to 56-53 with 4:24 remaining. Ross finished 4 of 8 for 213 yards and three touchdowns.

"He played well, and he's played well the entire season -- ever since we started district play, really," King said of Ross. "He settled down and became a great quarterback and a great leader. He did a lot of things for us, and when things looked kinda gloom and doom, we made a play and got back in it and made it a one-score game."

Miller ignited Longview's 272-yard rushing attack with 200 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Anthony added 65 yards and a pair of scores on 11 carries to go with two catches for 78 yards.

In all, Saturday's shootout featured three ties and four second-half lead changes.

"These were amazing games, and it's always going to be in my mind," Duffey said of his team's two playoff wins over Longview. "This ending just the same as last year is just a sign from God that he wants us to keep going."

Longview took its first lead since the first quarter by scoring on its opening drive of the second half, which began with Kyle Andrews' return of a Lake Ridge onside kick to the Eagles' 37. Anthony's 22-yard run on the second play of the possession put Longview in front, 31-28.

Lake Ridge had the answer, getting a 30-yard completion from Duffey to Carter on fourth-and-10, which extended the ball to the Lobos' 15. Three plays later, Carter's 4-yard touchdown run put the Eagles back on top, 35-31.

The Eagles converted their first four fourth-down opportunities of the game.

"Jett Duffey's a great player," King said. "He made some plays and converted some third-and-longs and fourth-and-longs. We knew it'd be one of those kind of nights; they're just that talented."

Longview followed with a nine-play scoring drive, getting a 17-yard touchdown run from Anthony on fourth-and-2 to put the Lobos ahead, 38-35, with 4:02 to play in the third.

Lake Ridge regained the lead, 42-38, on its next series, driving 70 yards in eight plays, and scoring on Carter's 1-yard run with 1:53 showing on the third-quarter clock.

The Eagles' defense sacked Ross on consecutive plays, leading to a Longview punt. Lake Ridge then put together an eight-play drive, which included a 17-yard Duffey scramble on fourth-and-10. Carter's 17-yard scoring run pushed the Lake Ridge advantage to 49-38 early in the fourth.

Longview and Lake Ridge exchanged first-quarter scores, with the Lobos drawing first blood on a Miller 3-yard run. Duffey followed with an impressive 52-yard touchdown run on the next series that featured five Longview missed tackles.

The Lobos punted after that, and Lake Ridge went on a 15-play, 89-yard drive that consisted of four third-down conversions and ended with Carter's 1-yard touchdown run for a 14-7 Lake Ridge lead 43 seconds into the second quarter.

A track meet ensued with Longview tying the game at 14-14 on Ross' 64-yard pass to a wide-open Jordan Wyatt, which preceded Duffey's 34-yard scoring strike to Zach Jackson to put Lake Ridge ahead, 21-14.

Miller broke off a 42-yard to jump-start Longview's ensuing possession, and his 1-yard run moments later tied the game at 21-21 with 6:34 remaining in the half.

Another Duffey touchdown pass -- a 37-yarder to Jimmy Enobabor on fourth-and-9 -- gave Lake Ridge a 28-21 lead before Jenkins' 33-yard field goal with 1:08 until halftime trimmed Longview's deficit to four points.
