COLLEGE STATION -- The Lufkin Panthers rebounded from a disappointing performance in pool play by going undefeated Saturday to claim the Division I consolation championship at the state 7-on-7 tournament at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex.

Lufkin, which went 1-2 on Friday to finish third in Pool M, won five consecutive games on the event's final day, including a 39-32 victory over Houston Cypress Falls in the consolation final.

The Panthers, who scored a 33-32 win over Laredo United in their final pool play game Friday, finished the tournament with six straight wins.

Lufkin defeated Houston Langham Creek, 19-13, in the Round of 32, which was followed by the Panthers' 35-28 defeat of Trophy Club Byron Nelson in the next round. Lufkin then took a quarterfinal win over El Paso Montwood (46-7), before it earned a 33-21 win over San Antonio O'Connor in the consolation semifinals.

East Texas' other two Division I representatives in College Station also performed well Saturday in the consolation bracket.

Lindale reached the quarterfinal round after recording wins over Mission Veterans Memorial (18-14), and Laredo United (34-25). The Eagles, who finished 0-3 in Pool N on Friday, were then eliminated by Humble Atascocita, 48-26, in the quarters.

Tyler Lee scored a Round of 32 victory over Abilene Cooper (53-26) before falling to San Antonio O'Connor, 54-34, in the next round.
