Lufkin + John Tyler Moving Down to Class 5A

Both Lufkin and John Tyler will be moving down from the state's highest classification for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years, according to conference cutoff numbers released by the University Interscholastic League, Wednesday.

The UIL has designated Class 6A will be comprised of schools with enrollments of 2,190 or more students. Lufkin and John Tyler turned in 2,158 and 2,153 respectively.

The two schools will now compete in 5A in all sports, and in the new 5A Division I in football. The only other East Texas school with that distinction is Texas High.

Several other area schools will be moving down in class in regards to football.

Bullard, Brownsboro, Center, and Liberty-Eylau all move from 4A Division I to 4A Division II.

Dropping from 4A Division II to 3A Division I are Diboll, Tatum, Atlanta, and Gladewater. Grand Saline and Quitman will fall from 3A Division I to 3A Division II.

Como-Pickton, Harleton, Beckville, and Garrison make the slide from 3A Division II to 2A Division I, while Simms Bowie moves down to 2A Division II from 2A Division I.

Only five East Texas schools will move up in classification.

Crockett, Hooks, and West Rusk go from 3A Division II to 3A Division I, while Timpson and Tenaha move up from 2A Division II to 2A Division I.

New districts will be released in February of 2018.
