It's been a long time coming for Kordell Rodgers.

Lufkin's junior quarterback announced Saturday via his personal Twitter account that he received his very first college football scholarship opportunity. Texas State did the honor as it reached out for a fourth potential East Texas player for its 2017 class.

Rodgers (5-10, 165), the 14th local player to hold at least one FBS offer, helped guide Lufkin to a 7-3 regular season record and a Class 5A Division I bi-district round playoff appearance during the 2015 season. He sustained a minor injury midway through the playoff game and did not return.

Aside from a solid throwing season, the quarterback fits the dual-threat prototype. He gives his high school program a second threat in the running game.

A lot has changed at Texas State since its 2015 season ended at 3-9.

Dennis Franchione resigned as the program's head at the conclusion of the campaign and Everett Withers ultimately replaced him. Withers joined the team following a successful two-year stint at James Madison highlighted by two FCS playoff appearances.

The Bobcats' new leader also served as North Carolina's interim head coach for the 2011 season after Butch Davis was fired in conjunction with that school's academic scandal. North Carolina went 7-5 during the regular season before dropping the Independence Bowl to Missouri.

Withers also has seven years of NFL experience as a defensive backs coach and served as a defensive coordinator at Minnesota and Ohio State.

The Texas State program has been bowl eligible twice through its three seasons as a full-fledged FBS school, but it will still be looking for its first bowl game appearance through the 2016 season.

Rodgers, meanwhile, will return to the Lufkin lineup for his senior year with several proven receivers at his disposal.

Lufkin was promoted to Class 6A during the UIL's latest realignment process and will participate in District 12-6A alongside the Conroe schools, Beaumont West Brook and Montgomery this year.

Rodgers, like all high school football prospects currently in their junior year, will become eligible to sign with any school that offers him in February.
