The second East Texas incoming senior has offered up a verbal college commitment in as many days. Lufkin QB/ATH Kordell Rodgers is the latest.

Rodgers (5-10, 165) confirmed to ETSN.fm Thursday evening of his intention to sign with Texas State in February. He follows Texas High QB Cade Pearson, who pledged to North Texas on Wednesday.

The Panthers' signal-caller is the 14th player in East Texas' 2017 recruiting class to commit. An additional 14 area prospects currently hold offers from FBS programs.

Rodgers, who has additional FBS offers from Arkansas State and Louisiana-Monroe, is one of seven local players to receive an offer from Texas State, but the first to commit. The Bobcats signed Liberty-Eylau WR Thurman Morbley this past February.

Senior receiver Dhailon Phillips, a teammate of Rodgers at Lufkin, also has an open invitation from Texas State.

The Bobcats will be led by first-year coach Everett Withers this fall. Withers, who has both college and NFL coaching experience dating back to 1988, replaced longtime coaching veteran Dennis Franchione during the offseason.

Texas State, one of the largest public universities in the state, competes in the Sun Belt Conference. The Bobcats were 3-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play last season.

Rodgers is a dynamic athlete who will be entering his second season as the Lufkin quarterback, but can also be utilized as a receiver at the next level.

He helped guide Lufkin to a 7-3 regular season record and a Class 5A Division I bi-district round playoff appearance during the 2015 season. Rodgers sustained a minor injury midway through the playoff game and did not return.

Aside from a solid throwing season (2,133 yards, 23 TDs), the quarterback fits the dual-threat prototype. He gives his high school program a second threat in the running game (599 yards, 5 TDs in 2015).

Lufkin will be a member of District 12-6A this fall along with Beaumont West Brook, Conroe, Conroe Oak Ridge, Montgomery, The Woodlands, and The Woodlands College Park.

Rodgers, like all 2017 recruits, can officially sign with the school of their choosing on Feb. 1, 2017.
