SAN ANTONIO — The Martin’s Mill Lady Mustangs captured the Class 2A state championship with a 58-51 win over LaPoynor, 58-51, in a battle of East Texas programs Saturday at the Alamodome.

Martin’s Mill (39-1) went on a critical 14-0 run in the third and fourth quarters to break open what had been a close game throughout.

With the Lady Mustangs trailing LaPoynor (34-2), 38-35, with 1:40 remaining in the third, Martin’s Mill took control by scoring the game’s next 14 points.

Briley Moon’s jumper with 4:45 remaining in the fourth gave Martin’s Mill a sizable 49-38 advantage.

Moon led Martin's Mill with 22 points to go along with seven rebounds. Abbie Orrick added 12 points, 17 rebounds, and three assists.

The loss overshadowed a brilliant performance from LaPoynor’s Te’Aire Hambrick, who poured in a game-high 32 points. No other Flyerettes player reached double digits in scoring.
