Josh Thompson announced Wednesday he will not attend TCU as originally intended and instead will make a home with the Texas football team after graduation from Nacogdoches High School in May.

Thompson, the Defensive Most Valuable Player at the ETSN.fm + APEC Football Recruiting Combine in May in part because of a 4.48-second, laser-timed 40-yard dash and a 36-inch vertical jump, shared the news through his personal Twitter account.

Texas decided to target Thompson on Sunday after the defensive back visited its campus in Austin for an Under the Lights camp Saturday.

Thompson (6-0, 182) had been committed to TCU since June 12 and was set to be part of an East Texas group also featuring Henderson athlete Trestan Ebner and Henderson running back Lakendrick VanZandt.

Instead, Thompson's new course will allow him to join former high school teammate Brandon Jones on the collegiate level. Jones, a safety in the same Nacogdoches backfield, was one of the Longhorns' most celebrated prospects in February and is expected to contribute in the near future.

Thompson recorded nine pass breakups, intercepted a pass and recorded 33 tackles through Nacogdoches’ 10 games last season while Jones worked above him. Thompson also caught 10 passes for 152 yards as a receiver.

Liberty-Eylau defensive end Lagaryonn Carson, Hooks athlete Montrell Estell and John Tyler receiver Damion Miller join Thompson as local seniors that have accepted Texas offers. That makes the Longhorns 4-for-5 within East Texas as they build their 2016 class.

Current Texas head coach Charlie Strong has worked his way to a somewhat disappointing 11-14 start through two seasons in Austin. At the same time, his recruiting classes have been met with fanfare, and the 2015 class was considered a top 10 haul nationally by Scout.com, Rivals.com and 247Sports.com.

Strong also should benefit from 16 returning starters from his 2015 team.

Thompson will become eligible to sign with Texas, or any other school that holds a scholarship spot for him, on Feb. 1, 2017.
