About a month after receiving an offer from the Charlotte 49ers, Jawuan Johnson decided to commit.

New Boston's senior defensive back pledged to Charlotte on Tuesday night. The 6-foot, 195-pounder also holds offers from Grambling State (Division I FCS) and Southern Arkansas (Division II).

Network Athletics alerted ETSN.fm on Tuesday night of Johnson's commitment.

Charlotte, which is reviving its long-dormant football program, will compete at the Division I FCS level in 2013 and 2014 before jumping to D-I FBS for the 2015 season.

Johnson had 101 tackles, five interceptions, two forced fumbles, and three defensive touchdowns in 2012, when New Boston finished 12-1 with a Class 2A Division I Region II final appearance.

He joins junior Jeff Gladney to give the Lions what should be a strong secondary this fall. New Boston enters the season ranked No. 3 in Class 2A Division I by Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. TheOldCoach.com's Friday Night Football magazine ranks New Boston 11th.
