[Updated: 2:32 p.m., Feb. 25)

Less than a week after being offered by LSU, Newton 2015 athlete Roney Elam has picked up his second and third Division I FBS offers.

Mississippi State offered the tall and rangy defensive back on Monday afternoon, before Baylor came calling Tuesday to give Elam his first Big 12 offer.

Elam (6-2, 175), who already held FCS offers from Lamar and McNeese State before hearing from LSU last week, is being recruited as a safety and cornerback after playing pulling double duty on the field last fall as the Eagles’ starting quarterback.

On defense, Elam made 23 tackles while pulling down five interceptions and forcing one fumble. In Newton’s run-heavy offensive attack, Elam passed for 939 yards and 11 touchdowns and ran for 437 and five scores in leading the Eagles to a 12-1 record and berth in the Class 2A Division I regional semifinals.

Elam is the third East Texan with a Mississippi State offer in the 2015 class, joining Gilmer athlete Kris Boyd and Troup quarterback Blake Lynch. There are six 2015 prospects in the region with offers from SEC schools — Elam, Boyd, Lynch, Whitehouse safety Justin Dunning, Gladewater defensive tackle Daylon Mack and Sulphur Springs safety Larry Pryor.

Baylor has has seven offers out to 2015 East Texas recruits. Joining Elam are Boyd, Dunning, Longview RB JaMycal Hasty, Lynch, Mack and Pryor.
