NEWTON -- Kevin Shorter had another huge game and Class 2A's top-ranked Newton Eagles moved to 2-0 on the season with a 22-17 win against Liberty on Friday night.

Shorter, a 6-foot, 190-pounder committed to Texas, carried 12 times for 221 yards and two touchdowns to lead a Newton running game that accumulated 405 yards. Shorter also caught one pass for 18 yards.

Fellow senior Brandon Johnson ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, while junior Roney Elam gained 42 yards on seven carries. Elam completed 3 of 4 passes for 34 yards.

Newton hosts Orangefield at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Eagles' final non-district game of the 2013 season. Newton takes a week off after that before starting District 10-2A Division I play Sept. 27 at home against Warren.
