CANTON -- In a battle between first- and second-place teams in District 15-3A, it was the No. 11 Lady Vandals of Van who rose to the top and swept the Canton Eaglettes, 25-20, 25-17, 25-18, Tuesday night at Eagles Gymnasium.

Van was led by senior middle blocker Haley McCarty, who tallied 13 digs, eight kills, five blocks, three assists and one ace.

After Canton (18-9, 5-3) dropped the first two sets and went down 14-6 in the third, junior Madi Allen served the next six points, including two aces to give Canton one last breath. But two blocks by McCarty and two kills from BriAnn Thompson thwarted any Eaglettes comeback, giving the Lady Vandals the clean sweep. The sophomore Thompson finished with five kills and four blocks.

"(Canton) started out really strong," said Van coach Kristen Reaves, whose Lady Vandals squad went to 33-3 overall and 7-0 in district. "They were hyped up. I told my girls we just need to be steady, play our game and relax, they'll eventually die down."

Also filling up the stat line for Van were Morgan Wilkerson, Hallee Carter and Susannah Wisdom. Wilkerson had 13 assists, two blocks, one kill and one ace. Carter added 11 digs and six kills, while Wisdom chipped in seven kills, four blocks and an ace.

"We have some height on this team," said Reaves, whose Lady Vandals totaled 16 blocks on the evening. "Thompson, Rogers and Carter are our wall."

The Eaglettes were led by seniors Brittney Brewer and Sierra Zielke, who had 12 kills with two blocks and eight kills and seven assists, respectively. Reagan Stanley and Brantlee Neff combined for 12 assists, six kills, two blocks and a couple of aces.

"We just have to keep playing hard," Canton coach Tobin Thurman said. "You can't take the success or the failures of the first game and roll them over to the next. You have to start fresh each time with as much passion and energy as the first set. We have to step up our game and do the things we've been coached to do and know how to do."

District 15-3A continues Friday when Van travels to Athens and Canton plays host to Mabank.
