LONGVIEW –– The Pine Tree Pirates played host to the Mount Pleasant Tigers in a District 9 5A Division II matchup Friday night.

There wasn't much defense to be said for the game, but there was no shortage of offense. Pine Tree managed to sneak away with the win, 55-50.

Pine Tree's Gabe Nelson, who led the district in rushing going into Friday, rushed for 278 yards on 22 carries with four touchdowns.

Pirates (4-1, 2-0) sophomore quarterback DJ Freeman rushed for 197 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.

Mount Pleasant (2-3, 0-2) tried to make it interesting in the fourth quarter with a late score from Josh Morris to Jamarian Brown with 36 seconds remaining in the game. The Tigers tried an onside kick, but failed to recover, and Pine Tree ran out the clock.

Both teams have district games next Friday with Pine Tree heading out to Tyler's Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium to play Jacksonville (1-4, 0-2), while Mount Pleasant has a home game against Marshall (3-2, 2-0).
